This section reviews the most commonly taught methods it is by no means a complete list of the possibilities. Many methods that can be used to update/upgrade a Cisco image. Some engineers like this and some don’t, but it does add another thing for engineers to be familiar with. For example, the 7206 Advanced Enterprise Services Image would have the image featureset representation of adventerprisek9, where “adventerprise” = Advanced Enterprise Services and “k9” = strong encryption). (This can be a little confusing because the featuresets available change between platforms. The featureset represents what type of features are included in a specific image. The platform is usually a short representation of the model type for example, the 7206 model is represented with a platform of c7200. The structure of the IOS image is typically platform: featureset: type. The Cisco IOS image-naming structure can be a confusing mess of different letters if the engineer is not familiar with the various feature sets from each platform. The system image is used when the device is in a “normal” operating state and is typically contained within flash memory (regardless of flash location [device building flash, slot0, slot 1, and so on). Depending on the platform, the boot image can be contained within ROM or flash memory.

The boot image is a subset of the Cisco IOS software that is used when network booting when loading IOS images onto a device or when the system image has been corrupted. A boot image (also referred to as the xboot, rxboot, bootstrap, or bootloader) and the system image (the complete IOS image). On most Cisco platforms, two different images are held within a device.

Although many entry-level engineers might not have the chance to upgrade many production routers, it is a vital skill to have as a network engineer because it will eventually be called on (either when an upgrade is happening or when a router is being placed or replaced). I am not expert in Packet Tracer and will leave it to other readers in the forum to address that part of your question.An important skill for Cisco network engineers to have is the ability to correctly perform an image update/upgrade. But it may be worth it to contact Cisco TAC and ask them about security updates and see what happens.
If you are not the original licensed owner of the router then TAC may hang up on that. Their rationale is that while hardware can be sold and transferred to a new owner, that the software is sold to the original owner and software is not transferable. 2) Officially Cisco says that it will do software replacement for original licensed purchaser of the router.

But if your router is still an officially supported model then there is some possibility that you could get an update from TAC. So what model of router do you have and has it reached its End Of Support Date? If your router is past its End Of Support Date then there will be no security updates.
So let us consider a couple matters of practicality: 1) Is your router eligible for support updates? For every router model Cisco establishes a date after which that model is no longer sold and then a date after which it will not support the software. In many of the vulnerability announcements that Cisco releases there is a provision for routers not under maintenance contract to obtain a software update that addresses the vulnerability directly from Cisco TAC and without charge.
